For Independence Day, Artist Trish Gianakis Launches an Augmented Reality Show in Liberty State Park

Visual art in Jersey City is usually analog. The pieces shown in the galleries around town tend to be made of physical stuff: oil paint, aerosol, clay, metal, and textiles. Artists may use computers to model their work before they make it, but rarely are digital footprints visible. Even video screens are rare sights in local art shows.

Into this material world comes Trish Gianakis. The Saint Peter’s professor has built a reputation as a designer of invisible spaces accessed through connected devices like smartphones. At “Echoes of Freedom,” which opens on Independence Day, visitors will point their phones at QR codes placed around Liberty State Park. When they do, they’ll access animations, virtual sculptures, and other artworks related to the landscape but present only in the digital zone generated by the artist.
